How long does an e-cigarette last?

As a brand-new user of e-cigarettes, there may be many things you need to keep track of. Among other things, how your new e-cigarette works and what it should contain, but also how long you can expect the e-cigarette to last before you need to buy a new one.

As a rule of thumb, the coil in your e-cigarette will last about 2-4 weeks. But if the e-cigarette still tastes like the flavor you have chosen and it still functions as it should, you do not need to replace it.

There are a number of tips you can do yourself to get your e-cigarette to work a little longer, and you can read more about it here in this blog post.

What is a coil?

A coil is also called a coil or a heater. The word 'coil' is the name that is most common and therefore it is probably also the name you will most often encounter when you talk about e-cigarettes.

The coil in an e-cigarette has the sole purpose of heating the e-liquid in the tank. When you turn on your e-cigarette, a metal wire inside the coil heats up. The heat will cause the e-liquid to evaporate, and the vapor that comes is the vapor you must inhale. In short, all e-liquids you have chosen, regardless of flavor, etc., will always pass through your coil.

Naturally, this will also mean that the coil is the component in your e-cigarette that will wear out first. It may therefore be necessary to replace it from time to time if you want to get as much flavor as possible out of all the vapor from your e-cigarette.

How do I make my coil last longer?

The heating element in your e-cigarette has a big impact on how long you can vape on your e-cigarette. If this is the first time you are going to use your e-cigarette, and therefore also the first time the coil starts, it is important that, as one of the first things, you let the coil get moistened with e-liquid to provide the best possible conditions.

If the coil is completely dry when you switch on the e-cigarette for the first time, you risk that it tastes burnt and that the heater is damaged because it is too dry. It is therefore always a good idea to soak the wick or cotton in your e-cigarette before you start vaping. To be completely sure that it is fully moistened after you have refilled with e-liquid, you should wait about 15 minutes before taking the first puff with your e-cigarette.

You can also choose to moisten the cotton manually; this you must do before you install it in the tank. Use a small pipette if needed and drop the e-liquid directly onto the cotton. You must continue until the cotton can absorb no more liquid.

Unfortunately, some e-liquids can also be too thick for your coil. Usually it is the sweet liquids, such as fruit flavors. Unfortunately, these can shorten the lifespan because the metal wire inside the coil has a tendency to caramelize.

Create the best conditions for your new e-cigarette

To create the best conditions for the cotton in your e-cigarette, you should always ensure that the tank of the e-cigarette does not become empty. If you do not have enough e-liquid in the tank, your e-cigarette will not be able to produce the necessary vapor, and the flavor when you vape will also deteriorate considerably.

If the tank runs out of e-liquid, the vapor in your e-cigarette will taste burnt and you must replace the coil with a brand-new one.

Here are three tips on how to get your coil to last as long as possible.

  1. Always ensure your e-cigarette has enough e-liquid. If you want to get the most out of vaping, you should always make sure the tank is completely filled with e-liquid.
  2. Choose an e-liquid with a high PG content. The e-liquid in your e-cigarette usually consists of 3-4 different things: PG, VG, nicotine and flavor. PG has a thinner consistency than VG, and the cotton therefore has the ability to absorb the liquid faster than if it were a liquid with high VG. Therefore, if you choose an e-liquid with a high PG content, the risk of a burnt taste when you vape is not as great, because the coil does not become dry.
  3. Try yourself with less flavor in your e-liquid. You can also try an e-liquid with less flavor, for example one of the standard e-liquids. These contain substantially less flavor than a self-blended e-liquid. Unfortunately, the flavor can caramelize, which can reduce the coil's performance and result in a bad and burnt taste.
  4. If your coil has caramelized, you can also try to clean it. You can do this with warm water or pure alcohol - for example vodka.
  5. Finally, you can also choose a tank and a battery with temperature control. By using temperature control you can give your coils a substantially better living conditions. The advantage of using temperature control is that you can set the temperature for your coil yourself. This means that the coil cannot heat up above the specified degrees. If the temperature in the coil drops, the battery is automatically reactivated.

If you have chosen to quit smoking, it's also likely that you use the e-cigarette every day, and the more you use your e-cigarette, the faster the e-cigarette will wear out. It also means that the higher the wattage you vape at, and the sweeter e-liquids you use, the faster the coil will wear out.
